METHOD OF BIOCLIMATIC EVALUATION OF TREES SHADE QUALITY TARGETING THE ANIMAL THERMAL COMFORT

SUMMARY: High temperatures and direct solar radiation cause significant harm to animals on pastures and to relieve them from the weather stress, the best strategy is to provide them trees shade. This work proposes a methodology to characterize and evaluate the thermal quality of shading of some species of trees focusing on the animal thermal comfort. The method was tested in Botucatu/ SP, Brazil. Samples of three trees species shades were evaluated: Qualea dichotoma (Warm.) Stafl., Pithecolobium incuriale (Vell.) Benth., and Copaifera langsdorffii Desf.. The variables air temperature, relative humidity, dew point temperature, and black globe temperature were registered in mini data loggers for 15 summer days, from 8am to 5pm, under the sun and under the shade of those species. The statistical design was completely randomized with four treatments and three repetitions. The thermal comfort indexes THI, BGHI and CTR were used to evaluate the shades qualities, which differed between species. It can be concluded that the proposed methodology was efficient for this type of evaluation and it can be recommended.
