1 RESUMO

PRODUCTIVITY AND QUALITY OF TOMATO FRUITS UNDER SEMIARID CONDITIONS IN RESPONSE TO IRRIGATION AND PLASTIC MULCH
2 ABSTRACT
Climate change poses a serious threat to water resources and agriculture, requiring innovative solutions to maintain food security. This study investigates the combined effects of different irrigation depths (ID) and plastic mulch on tomato crops in arid regions, where water optimization is crucial. Five irrigation depths were applied, ranging from 65% to 155% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc). The results indicated that total yield, average fruit weight, and diameter (TY, FW, and FD) increased with increasing ID, reaching an ideal range. The highest irrigation water productivity (IWD) was achieved with an irrigation depth of 305 mm cycle-1. Fruit quality improved under lower IDs, suggesting a potential relationship between yield and quality under water stress. The 577 mm depth (~124% of ETc) maximized productivity; for IWD, 305 mm (65% of ETc) maximized productivity. Considering the results, the plastic mulch did not significantly affect productivity/quality (p>0.05), probably due to the rainfall of 246 mm. A cycle of 577 mm (~124% of ETc) is recommended to obtain maximum yield under semi-arid conditions in Bahia; future studies should test the cover in dry cycles.
