The work had an influence on the water content in the evaluation of mechanical strength. The experiment was carried out at the Lageado Farm of UNESP / FCA, Botucatu / SP, showing two classes of soil, clay dystroferric Red Nitrogen (NVd) with 50% clay content and textured Red Latosol (LV) medium, with 25% clay content. The experimental design was randomized, with the following compaction treatments: T0 = 0; T1 = 1; T2 = 2; T3 = 3; T4 = 5 and T5 = 10 consecutive passes of an agricultural tractor. Use of a hydraulic-electronic penetrometer for mechanical soil sampling. 0.10 to 0.20; 0.20 to 0.30; 0.30 to 0.40m in 4 hours of water content. With the increase of traffic, the greater the compaction. Responsible for the clayey soil, from a tractor pass the values of the greatest distance pressure, not differing statistically for a more superficial layer (0-0,20m) and for a layer of 0.20-0,40m a from two passes. For the medium textured soil, it occurred from one pass to a more superficial layer (0-0.20m) and five passes to a layer of 0.20-0.40m.
